Blood Pressure Back to Normal: Can You Stop Your Medicine?

November 1, 2026 · 3 min read

A normal reading while you take your tablets usually means the medicine is working, not that you are cured. High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms, so stopping on your own can let it rise again unnoticed.

We hear this question often from customers who have been on blood pressure tablets for a few months. The readings look good, they feel fine, and the idea of stopping comes up. The short answer: do not stop on your own. Talk to the doctor who prescribed them first.

High blood pressure is rarely felt

WHO estimates that 1.4 billion adults aged 30 to 79 worldwide were living with hypertension in 2024. Most of them feel no symptoms at all, and the only reliable way to find out is to measure blood pressure.

Because it cannot be felt, feeling well is not a measure. A normal reading while you take your medicine regularly usually means the medicine is working, not that the condition has gone.

Many are still not under control

WHO also reports that only about 44% of people with hypertension have been diagnosed and treated, and only about 23% have it under control.

One reason is medicine not taken as prescribed. A review by Burnier and Egan in Circulation Research (2019) calls poor adherence a well recognised factor behind blood pressure that stays uncontrolled. It takes many forms: never starting treatment, not taking it as advised, or stopping partway. The same review describes hypertension as the leading cause of deaths from noncommunicable disease worldwide.

So you do not miss a dose

  • Take it at the same time every day, for example after breakfast.
  • Use a weekly pill box so a missed dose is easy to see.
  • Refill before you run out, not on the last tablet.
  • If a side effect bothers you, tell your doctor. Often the dose or the type of medicine can be adjusted without stopping.
  • Check your blood pressure at home now and then, and write the readings down for your next visit.

WHO also reminds people to take medicines as prescribed, not to skip or share them, and to keep follow up appointments. Beyond medicine, lifestyle still matters. Eating better, moving more and quitting tobacco all help lower blood pressure.

Coapotek pharmacists can help you set up a medicine schedule that is easy to follow and show you how to use a home blood pressure monitor.
